Record Store Day + poster-single success. Plus: 3 SHOWS this weekend!

Howdy once again internet world,

Well, this weekend was Record Store Day and I had a great time busking on my harmonium at Madcity Music Exchange!  I’ll post some pictures at some point.  It was a unique set doing just voice and harmonium versions of all my tunes, I think some of the songs sounded really cool in that format.  I played at 11am and then spent the rest of the afternoon browsing in the store and hanging out next door at the nutty bar.  My friend Mark was in town (with his fun dog, Sassy Jo) and we hung out with Ben and Sandra at the bar and had a bloody.  It was a good time seeing those friends.  Ben is moving off to begin a research job and then grad school in California, so the moments together are ever so precious.  We’ll miss you Ben!  B-)  (Hatching future West Coast tour plans now…)

This Record Store Day was also special because I released two new songs, All Around & Go Anywhere, in the unique format of a poster-single.  Months ago I made plans to record these 2 songs and release them as a 7″ for Record Store Day but then I realized I’d rather save the $800 it costs to press 100 of those and put it towards a full LP someday, and plus I was not going to have recordings in time to do test pressings etc, let alone I don’t know how to master for vinyl.  So I came up with this cool idea instead to release the single as a digital download, which I would put on the back of a Happy Record Store Day poster that I’d have my friend draw.  I love how these poster-singles turned out!  Look!

My friend Claire Warhus aka Snaggle Tooth did the artwork.  She’s one of the raddest people I know.  She co-runs Crucial Twat pro-femme events and zine and does most of the art for Wisco fliers, which are honest to god works of treasure every time.  I was not able to screenprint these posters in time for RSD, but I plan to make a screen soon.  For this first run I had 100 posters printed on 11×17 70 lb matte paper and I handnumbered and signed each one.  As I write this there are 76 posters remaining.  If you want to get one you can purchase the $5 download through my bandcamp which comes with a poster mailed to you.  Or come to a show soon and buy one in person!  (See below)

I hope you listen to the single though no matter what.  I consider these songs as-done-as-I-could-get-them-in-time-for-Record-Store-Day.  Who knows maybe I’ll end up re-recording these someday, or remixing or remastering these ones.  I do like how they turned out though even with the few blemishes I left in.  All Around is a glossy garage rocker and Go Anywhere is a guitar trip slowburner.  Feel free to email any feedback to me at : )

I am playing these upcoming shows this weekend that I’m really excited about.  Check these out…

Thursday – On An On/Sat Nite Duets/Heavy Looks at Regent Street Retreat.  8pm, $10.  Heavy Looks is the new power pop band that I play casiotone in! It’s very fun. I’m stoked we get to play with Sat. Nite Duets! Demos here.
Friday – TT & the Night Owls/Quiet Hollers/Fluorescent Pig at Mickey’s.  10pm, FREE.  This is my first show with the Night Owls, my new backing band consisting of Eric, TJ, and Cole!  We’ve been sounding really good, I can’t wait to play.  We’re joined by Quiet Hollers from Louisville Kentucky who I met in the Fall and are on tour!  It’s gonna be a great night.
Sunday – Asumaya/Czech Mate at Broom Street Theater.  8pm, $5.  Then on Sunday I am playing as Czech Mate at the Arts Extract Podcast’s Broom Street Theater Sessions.  I was honored to get asked and feel privileged to play!  It’s gonna be fun, Asumaya (Luke Bassaneur from Control’s solo rhythm-centric 1-man-band project) is incredible.  This is my first Czech Mate performance in almost a year.

So much more good stuff on the horizon, stay tuned.  Come out to a show!  Get a poster-single!

Til we meet again,

Another practice set

So today I bought this turntables package/mixer/case off of Craigslist! Image

Now I am way excited for Chillers’ Ball Wednesday night.  I thought that the venue would have tables, or that I could borrow some from somewhere in town, but I ended up finding these online and just going for em.  So I’m set for this Wednesday and all future ones, plus any partys and the like!

I had a great day today seeing my musician friends Chris Darby, Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray, and Ben Tufts, who were all in town to play a show at the Frequency.  The show was fun.  Snouts from Madison played as well and man alive are they great.  Martin and Sara are cool people and sound awesome together.  I’m pretty sure the whole room thought so.

Then I got home and wanted to break in the new DJ set so I ended up running through a short improv set, and here it was:
Pedro the Lion – Start Without Me
Sleeping in the Aviary – Another Girl
James Brown – I Got the Feelin’
Alex Chilton – Free Again
The Strawberry Alarm Clock – Incense and Peppermints
Bix Beiderbecke – Singing the Blues
Black Sabbath – Bassically (this song rules)
The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
Yo La Tengo – I’ll Be Around
The Shins – Saint Simon
King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown – Say So
Nat King Cole Trio – On the Sunny Side of the Street
Interpol – Obstacle 1
Harry Nilsson – Gotta Get Up
The Beatles – In My Life
Tame Impala – Music to Walk Home By
Sam Cooke – Nothing Can Change This Love
Serge Gainsbourg – Manon

Come out to the Dragonfly Lounge on Wednesday to hear me and DJ Kayla Kush spin with special guest William Z Villain!  9pm things kick off, spinnin’ all through the night.

Brute Heart – Hunter

Saw this awesome band at the Good Style Shop last night!  Brute Heart from Minneapolis, awesome spacey sometimes dancey psych rock from this trio of femmes.  Got their album Fearless Hunter and checking it out today.  They are heading to Riverwest Public House in MKE tonight, so homies go see ’em!

This song is sweet, they played it and I was grooving.

…As you can see here, here, here, here, and here.

AND in the previous 80 posts of YouTube videos which total the entire vlog series by Chris Darby from our Fall 2012 tour.  From August to November we traveled from Missouri through the Midwest, to the East Coast and New England, and then zig-zagged through the South on our way back home.  We played 50 shows in 80 days.  It was unreal and all encompassing.  A ton of work, a lot of fun, really tiring, and in the end worth it.

I’ve been back in Madison over 2 months now and in some way it still feels like I’m getting back into the groove of things.  I needed some time to decompress after all of that constant moving from place to place, being in the van, being with other people and constantly meeting new people, not showering or changing clothes, being a polite guest, getting good food, getting to the next town, being on a schedule.  After all of those eighty days of life on the road it is really good to be back home.

Oh but did I mention that I played music every day and every night for 80 days in a row?  Because that was also awesome and the greatest thing in the world.  I got a chance to focus on just being a bass player again for a while, and that was nice.  I also got a chance to play solo for people at almost every show.  And there seemed to be a piano at most places we stayed and I found myself playing piano a lot on this tour in our free time.

I hope you peruse some of Chris’s videos.  Some of my favorites include… – Skip to 1:41 for all you need to know about Matthew of The House Cafe in Dekalb, IL.  I spent 48 hours with this man! – Buffalo, NY was a trip!  The Vault run by Kevin was one of the coolest places we played, and The Rice Cakes from Rhode Island played with us and were awesome.  Plus on the way there…Canada, Poutine, Niagra Falls! – Good Times.  Some of my favorite people meeting on tour are all in this video when we hung out at The Beet Rust in Lewiston ME, Chris, Ben, Erin, Natalie, and then Chris & Kyle of course. – I played the best solo show of my life in Amherst, MA at this UMass house party at the Blue Haus, none of which got caught on video at all.  The people who lived at this house and let us stay with them for a while and put on the whole party and the show in their basement were all super awesome.  It felt like hundreds of people were there partying while we played.  (Chris hated it!  Haha)  My set didn’t get recorded, but this youtube video from that night does include a hilarious cameo from some party bro who busts into the middle of Kyle, Natalie, and I playing Greasy Coat and proceeds to drink two tall boys.  This made us laugh for much of the rest of tour. – This was the most beautiful sight-seeing we did at the lighthouses and rocky coasts of Maine.  Oh and a typical pizza stop.  Chris’s camera was really nice and you can see it in this one.
– Maine was awesome for a lot of reasons!  You can see our stay with Devon and our tour of a ghost island and a bog walk, and then you can see the jamboree from our last night in Orono in this clip.  And also we surprised Adelyn Rose in Portland and hung out with them at their bowling alley show!  We were on tour at the same time, they’re all from Eau Claire!  This was cool. – I liked Kentucky! – We were in New Orleans on one of our last stops!  And it was for Halloween!!  This clip does not show at all the crazy treehouse party we went to or the all-night drunken costume party throughout the city.  But trust me that was all awesome.  This clip does include how beautiful it was during the day though and also includes me doing a pretty solid piano version take of an original tune.

Now that I’m more settled in to being back at home I’m figuring out what to do next.  I have been thinking about finding people to play with for putting together a band for my solo stuff.  Or I may just do some home recording for a while and take a break from shows.  Or maybe just try to do both.  I may take a break from pop and rock-oriented stuff altogether for a little bit and try to noodle around as Czech Mate.

People ask me how tour was and if I’ll ever do it again.  My answer to this is I definitely would do it again just for a much shorter jaunt.  2 or 3 weeks in the Summer would be perfect.  Or a couple times a year, maybe again in the Fall.

It’s nice to not think about all that for a while, too.
